SeaIsland was once known as "MillionaireIsland" and was privately owned by a wealthy family. In 1911 a private resort was built named The Cloister. Sea Island was once home to Howard Coffin whom founded the Hudson Motor Company. He is very much responsible for the island we know and love today as his business endeavors allowed the community to flourish. It is a private community and has very limited access.
Before Howard´s time SeaIsland was actually known as Fifth Creek by the native Americans and was used as a fishing ground and was a popular grazing site for the local animal population.Since then SeaIsland has gone through several name changes including Isle of Palms, Long Island, Glynn Isle, and then finally SeaIsland.Indeed the history of SeaIsland is deep and rich and residents there will tell you that it is reflected within the community.
The hotel was recently rebuilt and the culture and history continues on in Sea Island & at The Cloister!
